1.
How pleasant and delightful on a bright summer’s morn, When the hills and the valleys are covered in corn; There’s a blackbird and a throstle sings on every green tree, And the larks sang so melodious, and the larks sang so melodious, And the larks sang melodious, at the break of the day. Said the sailor to his true love, ‘I’ll ’ave thee beware, Our topsails are hoisted and we must away; We are bound for the Indies where the loud cannons roar, Fare thee well my dear Nancy, fare thee well my dear Nancy, Fare thee well my dear Nancy, though you're the girl I adore.’ ‘And when I return, my love, and when I return, my love, And when I return, my love, I will make thee my bride.’ And the larks sang so melodious, and the larks sang so melodious, And the larks sang melodious, at the break of the day. A ring from her finger she instantly drew, Saying, ‘Take this, my darling, and I will be true.’ Ten-’thousand sweet kisses from her lips then she blew, ‘May the heavens protect thee, may the heavens protect thee, May the heavens protect thee, where’er thou may be.’

about

The places mentioned in the lyrics and names of these folk songs all take place within a roughly 10 mile square area south of Huddersfield, close to the northern edge of the Peak District where I spent the first 14 years of my life. The Keepers and the Drivers and Merry Mountain Child were written there. The others most likely started off elsewhere, but in the local tradition a song would be labelled the ‘anthem’ of a village or pub where it was popular. We’ll tek owt for nowt. This EP is dedicated to my grandparents Christine and Ian Sanderson, and to the singarounds at Holmfirth Folk Festival where I first heard the majority of these songs growing up. Thanks go out as well to the Yorkshire Garland Group website (www.yorkshirefolksong.net) which has been an essential resource for lyrics & historical information.
